FireCall, 10th of April, Chimney Fire, Horrabridge

Currently we get little feed back from people reading the blog. If you have any questions, suggestions or comments please use the facility below.

At 16:31 on the 10th of April, Yelvverton appliance was called to a chimney fire at an address at Horrabridge. On arrival the crew extinguished the fire in the grate and after some investigation came to the conclusion the chimney fire had burnt it self out. The crew used the thermal imaging camera to check the chimney for hot spots and once satisfied the chimney was not on fire the crew returned home station.

If you have a woodburner or a grated fire remember to get your chimney swept at least once a year and try to burn seasoned hard woods. There is no guarantee this will prevent a chimney fire but it will reduce the likelihood of it happening.

If you are unfortunate and have a chimney fire call the fire service and extinguish the fire in the grate/woodburner carefully using a hand brush to flick water onto the fire. This will extinguish the fire in the grate and send steam up the chimney to retard the fire. Remember, Water expands 1000 fold when it turns to steam!!! If you apply water to vigorously you will run the risk of scalding yourself as it turns to steam.
