Fire Call, 20th of March, Moorland Fires, Cadoverbridge.

Currently we get little feed back from people reading the blog. If you have any questions, suggestions or comments please use the facility below.

At 13:34 on the 20th of March, Yelverton appliance was called to a moorland fire at Cadoverbridge. On arrival the crew found lots of small fires in the area and made pumps three for man power! The scene was sectorised and crews dispatched to extinguish the fires. The crews were on the moor for some time working hard and the OIC made up for the welfare pod which provides toilet facilities and hot drinks etc.

This is swaling time of year and there are initiatives to swale the moor without wasting fire service resources, that are not over difficult to use!! A simple call to the service advising the Fire Service of where and when the swaling will take place and remaining with the fires until the swaling is over does not seem unreasonable!! On this occasion three appliances and a welfare pod were unavailable from 13:34 until 17:20 not to mention the cost!!! Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue have had their grant from the Government slashed over recent years, as have all Fire Services in the country as part of the austerity measures the government introduced to pay off the National debt!! It is frustrating to waste so much money and resources on something that could be avoided without too much trouble!!!
